Cottage Grove has announced the citywide watering ban will be lifted Aug. 1.

City administrator Charlene Stevens said Thursday that after that date, residents will again be free to water their lawns and gardens according to city regulations.

The ban was imposed May 23 to allow the city to make improvements to its water system. The city is digging a new well earlier than previously planned and adding filters to two other wells. The upgrades are in response to an announcement by state officials that levels of pollution in the city were too high.

In a news release, Stevens said the city’s water-pumping capacity is still limited. In response, the city council voted at its July 19 meeting to change the city’s watering regulations.

Homeowners and businesses after Aug. 1 must:

  • Water on even-numbered days for even-numbered addresses and odd days for odd-numbered addresses.
  • Avoid all watering between noon and 4 p.m.
  • Not water on the 31st of any month.

The city is asking anyone who spots a violation of these rules to call 651-439-9381.
