Voters in Cottage Grove will not be deciding the fate of a $18 million community center in November.
The City Council has canceled the referendum because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The vote might be re-scheduled for November 2021, according to city spokesman Scott Seroka.
The re-scheduled vote might not be for exactly the same proposal, however. City officials are weighing several add-on options for various pools and aquatic play areas.
At a recent meeting, officials discussed the various possibilities, which could bring the total cost to as much as $37.5 million.
The add-on proposals would bring the cost to:
- $23.5 million for an outdoor wading pool and splash area.
- $30 million for an indoor aquatic play area up to three feet deep.
- $32 million for an outdoor eight-lane 50-meter pool, several slides and play areas.
- $37.5 million for small play area and pool under a partially-retractable roof.
- $37.5 for an indoor lap pool and small play area.
The center would be built on a 14-acre site near the northeast corner of Keats Avenue and U.S. Highway 61. For the original $21 million cost, the city would get a day care center, an inflatable dome for sports, meeting rooms and a performance space.
