West St. Paul has found someone with more than 30 years’ experience running cities to serve as interim manager.

The city council on Monday hired retired Cottage Grove administrator Ryan Schroeder at a salary of $2,800 a week. Schroeder, who lives in St. Paul, started on Tuesday.

From 1997 to 2015, Schroeder was Cottage Grove’s city administrator and executive director of its economic development authority. He previously worked in Ramsey, Robbinsdale and Rockford.

The West St. Paul City Council on Jan. 9 voted 4-3 to approve a separation agreement with former city manager Matt Fulton, who abruptly resigned amid calls from some council members for him to step down.

The council on Monday also hired the consulting firm Mercer Group — at a cost not to exceed $20,500 — to conduct a search for a permanent city manager.

The council hopes to choose five finalists by early April and offer the job to its top candidate by mid-May.
